A is for Apple...

So today marks the first day in my quest to conquer the alphabet: cooking style. All week I thought I was going to make steamed asparagus with hollandaise sauce just like Julie makes in the movie. But the more I thought about it, I really don't like asparagus that much and hollandaise is uber fattening. So I decided to stick with the standard food asssociated with the letter "A", the apple.

(I was going to take a picture of me cooking it, but I was not looking too cute so I thought I would take a picture of my lovely kitchen instead! It's the perfect size and even with all my junk I still haven't run out of cabinet space! I LOVE IT!)

After I did a little research, I decided that an apple crisp would be perfect!

To make an apple crisp, you start out with the following ingredients:

Ingredients
10 cups all-purpose apples, peeled, cored and sliced
1 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup water

1 cup quick-cooking oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup butter, melted

I wasn't quite sure what "all-purpose" apples were, so I made an executive decision to go with the green granny smith. Below is a picture of my apples in the middle of the peeling and coring process.

Next I followed these directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degree C). Place the sliced apples in a 9x13 inch pan. Mix the white sugar, 1 tablespoon flour and ground cinnamon together, and sprinkle over apples. Pour water evenly over all. Combine the oats, 1 cup flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and melted butter together. Crumble evenly over the apple mixture. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for about 45 minutes.

Note: Since I was making this as a trial run, I cut the recipe in half and used a square pan instead.

Here's the finished product! Sorry it's a little blurry, at this point I was running late for church and had to take a pic in a hurry!

A few things I would change after tasting the fruit of my labor...I would reduce the amount of water, because it was a little more runny than I would've liked. Also, I would increase the oats to make it a little more crunchy! :)

Stay tuned for next week and the letter "B". I will actually be cooking for people other than myself so the pressure is on!

Bon Appetit!
